The Trio Becomes a Quintet
…as it’s Girls to the Rescue!
Not long after we arrived back at Elweir from the Farpoint trip, a couple of men from the Prince’s Guard turned up at the Abyzinian Night asking for me. When I identified myself, they presented me with a rather long, yet narrow, package. I opened it when they left and found a serviceable long sword, a gift from one Colvin Habets. His note explained that he thought my rapier was a fine weapon; however, he thought I might need something a bit heavier at times. I guess it was in appreciation for my work in subduing the bandits on our trip. (I must say Lieutenant Habets knows how to turn this girl’s head…)
Since it was early, I set off for the docks to see what news of other places might be coming in. While I was down there, I observed a huge flurry of activity with this tiny woman at the center of it. It was amazing as well as a bit amusing to see such a small person raise such a huge fuss. It turns out she’s an entertainer (mostly) and she settled on the Abyzinian Night as the place to put on her show.
Of course, Fiona had never seen the likes of these sorts of shows, so I told her we had to see it that night. At one point in her act, she recruited Darkarus to be vanished from her stage. Fiona and I yelled that we’d pay money to make him disappear. However, he was a good sport about it all… and we had a fine time that night.
The next day, we connected with the diminutive show woman, Aliella. She wanted to see the sights and find some things. So we all went out that morning. One of our stops was the Blindman’s Bookshop. Yully was in fine form and the shop was more of a wreck than ever. We went all over. Aliella did another show that night, too.
We went our separate ways in the morning. That evening, Darkarus didn’t return. I didn’t think that much of it. After all, none of us really knows what he does and it’s not like he tells us where he’s going or what he’s up to. But he didn’t turn up the next day, either … and Fiona had an unsettling dream about him … that something was wrong. Sure enough, there was an announcement being made all over town of a fight that night between one pair of guys and another. The second team was described as “The Abyzinian Giant and the Midget.” None of us had any idea who the “midget” might be, but Fiona and I had a suspicion who the “Abyzinian Giant” was … and we were pretty sure we’d have to get him out of whatever it was he’d gotten himself into this time. Aliella wanted to tag along as she thought she could be helpful.
We went to the fight venue early, hoping there might be some way to get Darkarus out of the mess before the actual fight. No luck there. He and the so-called midget (who sure looks like a dwarf to me, although they haven’t been widely seen in centuries now) took the ring against a couple of guys who (so far as I could tell) were something of local favorites. It was pretty much the ugly spectacle one would expect, but Darkarus and the dwarf won. We followed as they were being escorted from the venue back to wherever it was that they were being kept.
Once we were far enough, and the escorts were few enough, Aliella staged a distraction and Fiona whacked one of the escorting guards and I grabbed the other from behind. We freed Darkarus and the dwarf … who then forced the guards to take us all back to the place where they had been held. (Wait! We want to go back there? Why?!) The idea was to reclaim the stuff that had been taken from them when they were being held there … which they did without too much difficulty. Then we went back to the Abyzinian Night.
It turns out Darkarus had been grabbed by the Jibber-Jabber Gang as payback for some member he’d caught and turned in for a bounty (or something like that). To collect money for him, the gang had turned him over to the fight club crew … and that’s how he was paired with the dwarf.
The dwarf’s story is more mysterious. His name is Raganash and he doesn’t remember anything beyond the last few months. He’s also just learning the common language … or remembering it … or something. He doesn’t have many resources beyond his weapons, but Darkarus was willing to help support him. So he’s with us for now.
As for Aliella, she seems to want to hang around with us. I’m not sure why. But she does make a good distraction.
